I am currently reading Philip Pullman's Dark Materials. I am on the last book in the series, The Amber Spyglass. I never thought I would enjoy this series but I am pleasingly surprised. Have any of you guys read the books?

I have read all the books so far and I love them. The way the story progresses kept me reading and wanting to know more. I am on the final book of the series and it is keeping me glued to the book and on the edge of my seat. Never realizing what Lyra was meant to do or what her true meaning was/is what keeps me reading the book. Her mother is one character I just can't figure out. I start to think that she is actually nice and then she does something that just makes me angry.
I suggest if you haven't already read these books that you take some time and read them starting with the Golden Compass.

I had to sneak the Golden Compass from my mom. She doesn't want me reading the books because of the content. I admit that I haven't ever finished the book. Not because of the whole God issue, just because I couldn't really get into it. I may try again soon.

The books are amazing. Even though Pullman sort of shoves the whole "Religion is evil" message down your throat, the books are brimming with imagination and I'd recommend them to anybody who loves a good story. Lyra is a fantastic character, brave, strong, willful and smart. Pullman does feminist characters so well. The books are a little hard to get into but once you're sucked in, you can't get out!
If you like Pullman's HDM I'd recommend his other series, the Sally Lockheart Quartet. They're a Victorian mystery series about a girl called Sally and they're incredibly exciting. I actually have the second book in the series signed by Pullman!

Yes it does shove the "Religion is evil" down your throat. I will have to check out his Sally Lockheart Quartet. I don't think I have heard of that series. That is great that you have a book signed my him. Did you meet him to get it signed?

Yeah, I actually skipped school to go and see him! How rock and roll of me - but I had my parents' permission to do so, not so rebellious! He was speaking in Dundee about his work and signed autographs for everyone that was there. I really must take a picture of it.

I have read HDM and found it to be very exciting. I liked reading about the different worlds that Lyra and Will discover. I also liked the witches too.
